Directions

From the Berta hut, we briefly follow the hiking trail south towards the Mittagskogel until we reach a trail junction at the Ferlacher Sattel. Here, the original Panoramaweg Südalpen leads along the black mountain trail as a normal trail (marked as "680") straight to the summit of the Mittagskogel.

Initially, the trail meanders sweetly through the sparse forests and crosses the western flank at the lower edge in a southerly direction without any major differences in altitude. Subsequently, the path becomes increasingly gravelly, in sections also more sloping and a few gullies and short steep steps must be overcome. The path, lined by mountain pines, has been somewhat defused by numerous steps and seeks the easiest way through this wild ambience until close to the walls of the Hühnerkogel. From here in numerous serpentines to the 2,070 m high saddle. If you wish, you can climb the Mittagskogel(2,145 m) in about 15 minutes on foot via the path that runs just below the ridge.

The Panoramaweg Südalpen branches off at the saddle to the southeast in the direction of Hühnerkogel and becomes increasingly alpine due to steep crossings. The trail, partly lined with mountain pines, essentially follows the course of the ridge either directly on the ridge or in the alpine grass slightly below it. In the incision northwest of the Hühnerkogel, insurance facilitates the continuation of the trail, but sure-footedness, a head for heights and climbing skills are required here. Motivated hikers can still take the Hühnerkogel (2,034 m) by a short climb.

Southeast of the Hühnerkogel we reach the Krainer Törl over gentler terrain. Over the grassy southern slopes of the Bärenkogel, the trail now descends slightly in the direction of the Mlinzasattel. The trail joins a Slovenian trail at a spring at about 1,600 m and leads at a constant altitude to the Mlinzasattel (1,581 m).

The next prominent peak on the trail is the Frauenkogel (1,892 m), which is bypassed on the Slovenian side - here, too, a climb is possible and worthwhile. In the saddle between Frauenkogel and Rosenkogel, trail no. 1 and 678A join. Directly at the border the trail leads over the gentle Rosenkogel (1,776 m) to the Rosenbachsattel (1,586 m) where trail no. 678 and the alternative to this stage join.

Up to the Eckelesattel we leave the border course again and follow the trail in the slopes of the Hahnenkogel at a constant altitude of about 1,600 m. From the Eckelesattel (1.487 m) we reach the Kahlkogelhütte, slow. Koča na Golici (1,573 m) the well-deserved stage destination.

Route description alternative:

From the Berta hut, we briefly follow the hiking trail south towards the Mittagskogel until we reach a trail junction at the Ferlacher Sattel. Here the original Panoramaweg Südalpen leads straight uphill along the trail to the Mittagskogel.

However, we turn left and hike down the forest road ("603" or Kärntner Grenzweg) into the Gratschenitzengraben. In between we change to a trail directly in the ditch before we meet another forest road that takes us further down through the ditch.

At the Bärental power station we come across the striking Bärengraben, which leads south from Rosenbach. Here we turn right onto the forest road that takes us uphill towards Rosenbach saddle. Here we hike again on the original route of the former first stage of the Panorama Trail Southern Alps. The forest road is shortened on the marked trail 603A/678.

Passing the private Rosenkogelhütte we reach the Rosenbachsattel (1,587 m) and thus again the "new" route of the Panoramaweg Südalpen, which joins it from the west. Now we continue to follow the marked trail in a northeasterly direction. Here we bypass the Hahnkogel (1,753 m) and descend first over alpine grass, later through beech forest to the Eckelesattel (1,488 m). Now in an easterly direction across the trail located exactly on the border between forest and alpine grass on the south, which finally leads directly to the Kahlkogelhütte (Koča na Golici, 1,582 m), our stage destination.

Safety instructions

10 Recommendations of the PES
As a nature sport, mountain hiking offers great opportunities for health, community and experience. The following recommendations of the alpine associations serve to make mountain hikes as safe and enjoyable as possible.

1. healthy in the mountains
Mountain hiking is an endurance sport. The positive stress stimuli for heart and circulation require health and a realistic self-assessment. Avoid time pressure and choose a pace that doesn't leave anyone in the group out of breath.

Careful planning
Hiking maps, guide literature, the Internet and experts provide information about length, altitude difference, difficulty and current conditions. Always adapt tours to the group! Pay particular attention to the weather forecast, as rain, wind and cold increase the risk of accidents.

3. complete equipment
Adapt your equipment to your undertaking and pay attention to a low backpack weight. Rain, cold and sun protection always belong in your backpack, as well as a first aid kit and cell phone (Euro emergency 112). A map or GPS can help you find your way.

4. suitable footwear
Good hiking shoes protect and relieve the foot and improve the surefootedness! Make sure they fit perfectly, have a non-slip treaded sole, are waterproof and lightweight.

5. surefootedness is the key
Falls, as a result of slipping or tripping, are the most common cause of accidents! Note that too much speed or fatigue will greatly affect your surefootedness and concentration. Beware of falling rocks: by walking carefully, you can avoid hitting rocks.

Stay on marked trails
In pathless terrain, the risk of disorientation, falling and falling rocks increases. Avoid shortcuts and return to the last known point once off the trail. Often underestimated and very dangerous: steep old snow fields!

7. regular breaks
Timely rests are for recreation, enjoying the scenery and socializing. Food and drink are necessary to maintain performance and concentration. Isotonic drinks are ideal thirst quenchers. Granola bars, dried fruit, and cookies satisfy hunger along the way.

8. responsibility for children
Note that variety and playful discovery are paramount for children! In passages with a risk of falling, an adult can only supervise one child. Very exposed tours that require prolonged concentration are not suitable for children.

9. small groups
Small groups ensure flexibility and allow mutual help. Inform familiar people of destination, route, and return. Stay together in the group. Beware of lone hikers: even minor incidents can lead to serious emergencies.

10 Respect for nature and the environment
To protect mountain nature: do not leave litter behind, avoid noise, stay on trails, do not disturb wild and grazing animals, leave plants untouched and respect protected areas. To get there, use public transportation or carpool.
