Directions

The path towards "Koschutnikturm/Lärchenturm/KGW" begins just south of the Koschutahaus. Follow this uphill through beautiful forest - leaving the turn-off to the Lärchenturm on the right - in 30 minutes to the Meiniksattel (1484m). Continue following the "KGW" signposts on the right up to the scree field below the Koschutnikturm. Cross this at its lower end on a path to the small Wiltze saddle between the Koschutnikturm and the small peak "Wiltzespitze" (approx. 1720m; note: 10m after the sign, do not follow the arrow upwards, but continue straight ahead in the direction of the "Ost" markings). Then cross the impressive scree giants with some difficulty (in snowy conditions, great care is required in some places), sometimes very close under the huge rock faces of the Dicken Koschuta (Tolsta Košuta), always following the "KGW/Potoksattel" markings until you reach the last rocks.
Now descend through forest terrain to a fork in the path. Here straight ahead to the Potoksattel (1411m; up to here about 3h). Partly exposed (always in the direction of "Ghf. Franzl/KGW") on a steep path in the forest just below the summit of the Kalischnikturm and Reschounikturm (2 wooded, small, rugged peaks). Between these, a path descends to the left (signpost "Schaidasattel"). Descend this narrow path through beautiful but steep forest to the chapel in the Meleschniksattel "Sedelce". Continue along the forest road for about 250m until a path with wooden railings leads up to the right. Follow this for a few meters, then continue downhill on a beautiful hiking trail following the markings - past the Pamenutius Chapel - to the Schaidasattel. From here, take the asphalt road down to Zell-Terkl to the Terklbauer inn in 45 minutes.

Safety instructions

Partly narrow and slightly exposed paths and trails that require surefootedness, but well marked. Some large cirques are tedious, but mostly well passable. In between, several gullies and secured places where the greatest caution is required, especially in snowy conditions. In case of rain, the section "Potoksattel-Sedlce" caution is advised: partly steep forest!

10 recommendations of the PES

As a nature sport, mountain hiking offers great opportunities for health, community and experience. The following recommendations of the alpine associations serve to make mountain hikes as safe and enjoyable as possible.

1. healthy in the mountains
Mountain hiking is an endurance sport. The positive stress stimuli for heart and circulation require health and a realistic self-assessment. Avoid time pressure and choose a pace that doesn't leave anyone in the group out of breath.

Careful planning
Hiking maps, guide literature, the Internet and experts provide information about length, altitude difference, difficulty and current conditions. Always tailor tours to the group! Pay special attention to the weather forecast, as rain, wind and cold increase the risk of accidents.

3. complete equipment
Adapt your equipment to your undertaking and pay attention to a low backpack weight. Rain, cold and sun protection always belong in your backpack, as well as a first aid kit and cell phone (Euro emergency 112). A map or GPS can help you find your way.

4. suitable footwear
Good hiking shoes protect and relieve the foot and improve the surefootedness! Make sure they fit perfectly, have a non-slip treaded sole, are waterproof and lightweight.

5. surefootedness is the key
Falls, as a result of slipping or tripping, are the most common cause of accidents! Note that too much speed or fatigue will greatly affect your surefootedness and concentration. Beware of falling rocks: by walking carefully, you can avoid hitting rocks.

Stay on marked trails
In pathless terrain, the risk of disorientation, falling and falling rocks increases. Avoid shortcuts and return to the last known point once off the trail. Often underestimated and very dangerous: steep old snow fields!

7. regular breaks
Timely rests are for recreation, enjoying the scenery and socializing. Food and drink are necessary to maintain performance and concentration. Isotonic drinks are ideal thirst quenchers. Granola bars, dried fruit, and cookies satisfy hunger along the way.

8. responsibility for children
Note that variety and playful discovery are paramount for children! In passages with a risk of falling, an adult can only supervise one child. Very exposed tours that require prolonged concentration are not suitable for children.

9. small groups
Small groups ensure flexibility and allow mutual help. Inform familiar people of destination, route, and return. Stay together in the group. Beware of lone hikers: even minor incidents can lead to serious emergencies.

10 Respect for nature and the environment
To protect mountain nature: do not leave litter behind, avoid noise, stay on trails, do not disturb wild and grazing animals, leave plants untouched and respect protected areas. To get there, use public transportation or carpool.
