The first stage of the Panorama Trail Southern Alps begins in the village of Thörl-Maglern. The trail leads past the parish church of St. Andrew in Thörl, first slightly downhill along the road to the watercourse of the Gailitz. Following the trail markings, we reach a wooden bridge after a short forest passage, over which we reach the other bank. Continue straight on and between the nearby buildings to the asphalt road. Follow this road in an easterly direction for a good kilometer until you reach the Maurer farmstead.
Here follow the signpost along the road steadily uphill. After two changes of direction we soon reach a meadow with a wayside cross, now for a while uphill along the road. As the mountain slopes become steeper, the forest becomes more and more interspersed with deciduous trees; past a geological outcrop and numerous hunter's seats, we leave the road at 960 m above sea level (signpost) and follow the trail steeply uphill through an idyllic mixed mountain forest; after about 200 meters of altitude, the trail crosses a road and, after a few minutes of walking, finally joins another road.
Follow this uphill in an easterly direction; just before the old customs hut, follow the trail markings and a path that runs to the left of the hut. After a steeper start, the path becomes flatter and leads to the summit of Homitsch. From now on, we follow the marked trail along the border, always along the ridge; an ecological highlight of this trail passage are undoubtedly the numerous ant hills that line the path. At the end of the last ascent, just before the summit of the Dreiländereck, we still have the opportunity to visit an old fortress.
The view from the Dreiländereck is immense: in front of us, lined up like on a string of pearls, are the Dobratsch south face with the Schütt below (the largest landslide area in the eastern Alps), the Gailtal Alps, the Carnic Alps, the Gailtal valley with the Gailtal breakthrough, the Rosental valley, the Villach basin, the Nockberge mountains and, close to the south, the imposing Julian Alps.
The impressive panorama accompanies us further along the path towards Seltschacher Alm, with a short descent or ascent along the ski area. From the top station of the chairlift continue towards Wurzenpass. We cross under the steep slope of the Hahnenwipel, a short forest passage follows until we reach a road. Follow this path in an easterly direction downhill until a prominent copper beech marks the turnoff to a trail; we hike the last 250 meters steeply downhill to the Wurzenpass.

10 recommendations of the PES
As a nature sport, mountain hiking offers great opportunities for health, community and experience. The following recommendations of the alpine associations serve to make mountain hikes as safe and enjoyable as possible.
1. healthy in the mountains
Mountain hiking is an endurance sport. The positive stress stimuli for heart and circulation require health and a realistic self-assessment. Avoid time pressure and choose a pace that doesn't leave anyone in the group out of breath.
Careful planning
Hiking maps, guide literature, the Internet and experts provide information about length, altitude difference, difficulty and current conditions. Always adapt tours to the group! Pay particular attention to the weather forecast, as rain, wind and cold increase the risk of accidents.
3. complete equipment
Adapt your equipment to your undertaking and pay attention to a low backpack weight. Rain, cold and sun protection always belong in your backpack, as well as a first aid kit and cell phone (Euro emergency 112). A map or GPS can help you find your way.
4. suitable footwear
Good hiking shoes protect and relieve the foot and improve the surefootedness! Make sure they fit perfectly, have a non-slip treaded sole, are waterproof and lightweight.
5. surefootedness is the key
Falls, as a result of slipping or tripping, are the most common cause of accidents! Note that too much speed or fatigue will greatly affect your surefootedness and concentration. Beware of falling rocks: by walking carefully, you can avoid hitting rocks.
Stay on marked trails
In pathless terrain, the risk of disorientation, falling and falling rocks increases. Avoid shortcuts and return to the last known point once off the trail. Often underestimated and very dangerous: steep old snow fields!
7. regular breaks
Timely rests are for recreation, enjoying the scenery and socializing. Food and drink are necessary to maintain performance and concentration. Isotonic drinks are ideal thirst quenchers. Granola bars, dried fruit, and cookies satisfy hunger along the way.
8. responsibility for children
Note that variety and playful discovery are paramount for children! In passages with a risk of falling, an adult can only supervise one child. Very exposed tours that require prolonged concentration are not suitable for children.
9. small groups
Small groups ensure flexibility and allow mutual help. Inform familiar people of destination, route, and return. Stay together in the group. Beware of lone hikers: even minor incidents can lead to serious emergencies.
10 Respect for nature and the environment
To protect mountain nature: do not leave litter behind, avoid noise, stay on trails, do not disturb wild and grazing animals, leave plants untouched and respect protected areas. To get there, use public transportation or carpool.
