Julius Kugy three-country trail in 30 stages - E 1

From the Bertahütte, the Südalpenweg 603 and Kärntner Grenzweg lead us along the goods road down into the Gratschenitzengraben. Passing the Bärental power station and the Rosenbach stream, we reach the large Suchagraben southeast of Maria Elend - the Südalpenweg 603 is marked via the mountain chapels (alternative - see picture gallery). South of the scattered settlement of Matschach with the church of St. Rupert, we turn into the Bärental valley and soon reach the Olipitz cross and Alt/Neu St. Michael(supported by trail no. 673). Optionally, we can visit the governor's memorial just before the paved Bärental road and the Stouhütte. On a gravel road (with some shortcut options) we reach the finish of the 1st stage of the Julius Kugy Three-Country Trail at the Klagenfurter Hütte via the Johannsenruhe and the Matschacher Alm .
