The 772-meter-high Kathreinkogel, which stands out strikingly from the valley floor and is located between the Drau River and the western bay of Lake Wörthersee, has been inhabited since the 7th millennium BC. Surface finds indicate that already Mesolithic hunter-gatherers (7th/6th millennium BC) and Neolithic farmers (3rd millennium BC) used the mountain as a settlement site. Archaeological excavations have now also provided evidence of a Late Bronze Age settlement.
On the Kathreinkogel there were hut buildings of different dimensions everywhere where natural larger depressions in the steep slopes provided an absolutely wind-protected location. On a west-facing slope terrace, a remarkable economic site from the 12th/11th century B.C. was uncovered, the most important find of which is a prehistoric vertical loom.
The museum is open July and August daily from 10 am - 4 pm with free admission (except in case of rain).
