Guided tours take place in July and August at 10:30, 12:00, 14:00, 15:30, and 17:00 hours – for registered groups of 20 or more, also at other times!
You should plan for a duration of approximately 1-1.5 hours. The Granatium is accessible and suitable for strollers. Weather-appropriate leisure clothing is recommended. In the mine, the temperature is 8-10 degrees.
The special exhibition in the Granatium is dedicated to "white gold" magnesite. "The WORK – Then and Now" provides a unique insight into magnesite mining, the discovery of deposits, the influence on the region, and the work in the factory.
A chamber full of treasures: From a vision of geologist and mineralogist Dr. Georg Kandutsch, the centerpiece of the Granatium – the garnet room – was created. 80 tons of garnet stones - exclusively mined or found in Carinthia - were needed to decorate the garnet room. The thinly polished, backlit garnets create an impressive effect here.
The 300-meter-long mine, which connects to the museum, gives visitors insight into the underground home of the gemstone. Passing by a small, clear lake, pyrite and garnet veins, they emerge back into the open air. There, the mining area opens up at the Kaninger Bach. Equipped with safety glasses and hammers, big and small miners get to work and mine garnet stones from the garnet vein.
