Friesach - lebendiges Mittelalter
Friesach, Carinthia’s oldest town, was called civitas in 1215. Even today the town presents its medieval origins: The defences consist of the town walls and the outer bailey, which still carries water.
From 860 to 1804 Friesach was in possession of the church of Salzburg and it was even the residence of Salzburg’s archbishops.
In the present it is still possible to experience what life in the middle ages was about: in “The virtual world of myths” in the granary, you can follow the story of a medieval myth: you can follow the unicorn’s signs. When walking through the town you can see the most beautiful squares. In the museum on the Petersberg you can get an insight in the town’s history and while relaxing at a knight’s dinner, you will experience how medieval dishes tasted.
Our medieval festival, the Spectaculum, which takes place every year on the last Saturday in July, is well-known even beyond boundaries. The local people, wearing medieval clothes, do their best to demonstrate what life in the middle ages was about.
