BURGIS PAIER - The Great World Theatre

In 2018, when she was confronted with her own mortality for the first time due to a serious illness, Burgis Paier began to stage her great world theatre. She has interpreted and portrayed 350 personalities from the broad field of art and cultural history who were formative for her life and art: Artists, writers, composers, philosophers, musicians, singers, fashion designers, actors, freedom fighters, politicians, explorers, natural scientists and even fairytale figures are among them. However, the costume designer and puppet maker Paier has not made puppets or marionettes for a theatre, nor has she created classical sculptures and sculptures as a visual artist. She has created hybrids that oscillate cleverly between the two forms of representation and exhibition: half sculpture, half puppet, half permanent, half ephemeral, half body, half image.
