Leonstein castle ruins and Hohe Gloriette | Lost Place
The ruins of the once mighty Leonstein Castle tower over the forest around one kilometre from the route (only passable at the beginning). The oldest parts of the fortification date back to the 12th century. Since the 17th century, the castle had fallen into disrepair until a few decades ago, when volunteers restored the remaining walls. Little is known about the history of the castle. An evil lord of the castle plays the leading role in an old legend: he is said to have killed his wife's brother because he mistook him for a rival. He then did penance as a hermit on Snake Island in Lake Wörthersee. From the ruins, an almost 300 metre long hiking trail leads to another vantage point, the ‘Hohe Gloriette’. It is said to stand on the remains of a second castle, the Seeburg.
